Previously, Professor Apressyan has been Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Ethics, Institute of Philosophy, and Assistant professor; Research Fellow in the Department of Ethics, Faculty of Philosophy, Moscow State University.

Prof. Apressyan’s recent professional activities include, among others, being Director of Center for Applied and Professional Ethics, 2003 to the present; Expert in the Subprogram in Tolerance, a Megaproject for Higher Education, Open Society Institute (Soros Foundation – Russia), from 2000 to the present; Expert; Chairman (1999) in the Secondary Education Program Board, Open Society Institute (Soros Foundation – Russia), 1996–1999; Director of the "Responsible Citizenship – Rational Choices", Russian–American education and publication project, 1995–1997; Expert in the Russian Foundation for Humanities (RGNF), from 1995 to the present; Director, The Research and Education Centre for the Ethics of Non-violence, Moscow, 1989 – 1999, and acting as the Executive Coordinator of the Encyclopedia of Ethics, 1995-2001.

Professor Apressyan has written, co-written and edited numerous books and articles on ethical and other issues in philosophy, published in Russia and as translations in other countries.
